Fire in Kenya's Tsavo East park spreads towards Taveta-Voi highway, report says

A large fire was seen in Tsavo East National Park on Saturday 3 October 2026 and was spreading towards the Taveta-Voi highway, Kenyans.co.ke reported on 4 October. The outlet said footage showed "massive tracts of land engulfed in flames".

Kenyans.co.ke said its open-source triangulation data showed the fire had started early in the week. It said the cause had yet to be established and that the footage showed no signs of a response from any agency.

Kenyans.co.ke reported on 7 September that a fire had broken out along the Voi-Taveta Road in Taita Taveta County at about 9:50pm on Sunday 6 September. An earlier report had said a fuel tanker overturned on the road and its spilt fuel caught fire. The Kenya Red Cross said on 6 September that the incident was a bush fire, not a tanker fire, People Daily reported.

Capital FM reported on 7 September that the Kenya Red Cross, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the county fire brigade remained on the ground working to contain that fire and keep nearby residents safe. It also reported that, according to KWS, the service established 1,160 kilometres of firebreaks in several ecosystems between 2022 and 2025.

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) said in its aerial unit report for August 2026 that a serious bushfire in the Murka area on 7 and 8 August burned 3,933 acres. It said a fixed-wing aircraft provided aerial assistance to teams from KWS, SWT and the Tsavo Trust on the ground.
