Chinese pay-TV operator StarTimes unveils fifth season of dating show Hello Mr. Right in Kenya

Chinese pay-TV operator StarTimes unveiled the fifth season of the reality dating show "Hello Mr. Right" in Nairobi on 6 October, Xinhua reported. The show is due to premiere later in October on Rembo TV, a StarTimes-owned channel.

Senior executives, celebrities and content creators attended the launch. The show explores modern dating, relationships and marriage.

"So far, Mr. Right is the biggest dating reality show in Africa," Tamima Ibrahim, marketing director at StarTimes Kenya, said, as quoted by Xinhua. She said subscribers "have been very loyal in terms of supporting it for the many years it has been on air". She said the fifth season will be co-hosted by Kenyan male and female artists with large online followings, and that audiences will take part in conversations on family, wealth and financial literacy.

The lead host is Sande Bush Oyolo, known by his stage name Dr. Ofweneke. Xinhua quoted him as saying he is keen to handle issues around choosing partners, including the authenticity of ideas about love and marriage.

Chloe Yang, director of the content department at StarTimes Kenya, said the company wants to bring Kenyan audiences stories and entertainment that feel real, relatable and close to their everyday lives, as quoted by Xinhua. She added that StarTimes has aired the show in several African countries, including Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia.

China Daily reported on 5 March 2025 that the Kenyan show is a version of the Chinese dating programme "If You Are the One", and that official YouTube clips from the series had drawn more than 16.35 million views.
