Wahenga Wa Sanaa
Tracing Kenyan artistic heritage from 1800 to 1980.
About the event
Wahenga wa Sanaa: Tracing two centuries of artistic legacy 1800-1980 is a long-running exhibition in the Creativity Gallery of the Nairobi National Museum, drawing on the National Museums of Kenya collection and funded by the Kenya Museum Society.
The title honours the wahenga, the ancestors and cultural forebears whose creativity laid the ground for later generations. Historical crafted objects such as a Kipsigis stool, decorated gourds and other artefacts are shown alongside modern and contemporary works, grouped around cultural identity, spirituality, history and politics, nature and the environment, and the growth of formal art training and institutions.
Artists on view include Magdalene Odundo, Leonard Kateete, Theresa Musoke, Fred Oduya, Rosemary Karuga, Moses Ekui, Saa Gamba and Wanyu Brush. Reviewers note the show partly stands in for the national art gallery Kenya has never had. Museum entry rates apply.
